1996 Olympic Games

Haile Gebrselassie won his first Olympic gold medal in the 10,000-meter race at the 1996 Summer Olympics. During the race he competed against some of the best long-distance runners in the world. One of his strongest rivals was Kenyan runner Paul Tergat. For most of the race the two athletes ran close to each other while maintaining a fast pace. In the final lap Haile used his powerful finishing speed to move ahead and win the race. This victory made him an Olympic champion and brought great pride to Ethiopia.

2000 Olympic Games

Four years later Haile returned to the Olympics and competed again in the 10,000-meter race at the 2000 Summer Olympics. The race was very intense and competitive. Haile once again faced strong competition from Paul Tergat. During the race both runners stayed near the front of the group. In the final lap they sprinted toward the finish line in one of the most exciting moments in Olympic distance running. Haile crossed the finish line just ahead of his rival and won his second Olympic gold medal.

The 10,000 Meter Race

The 10,000-meter race is one of the longest and most challenging events in track and field athletics. Runners must complete twenty-five laps around the track while maintaining speed and endurance. Athletes must also use strategy to save energy for the final part of the race. Haile Gebrselassie became famous for his ability to stay with the leading runners and then accelerate during the final lap. This powerful finishing sprint helped him win many important races.
