ይህ ትምህርት ቤት በ፲፱፻፲፭ (1923) ዓ.ም. ሲመሠረት የኢትዮጵያ የዘመናዊነትና የሥልጣኔ መጀመሪያ እንዲሆን ታስቦ ነበር። ተቋሙ ለቤተ-መንግሥትና ለቤተ-ክህነት የሚሆኑ የተማሩ ዜጎችን ከማፍራቱም ባለፈ፣ በኢትዮጵያ የድርሰት ታሪክ ውስጥ ትልቅ ቦታ ያላቸውን ግለሰቦች ቀርጿል። ለምሳሌ እንደ እነ ሐዲስ ዓለማየሁ (የ"ፍቅር እስከ መቃብር" ደራሲ) እና አፈወርቅ ገብረየሱስ ያሉ ታላላቅ የብዕር ሰዎች መሠረታዊ የድርሰትና የቋንቋ ጥበብን የቀሰሙት እዚህ ግቢ ውስጥ ነው። ዛሬም ቢሆን ተቋሙ በቋንቋ ትምህርቶችና በድርሰት ዙሪያ ያለውን ጥንካሬ ይዞ በመቀጠል፣ ተማሪዎች የሀገራችንን የቃላት አጠቃቀምና የጽሑፍ ጥበብ በጥልቀት እንዲረዱ በማድረግ ረገድ ትልቅ አሻራ እያኖረ ይገኛል።

Established in 1923 by Ras Teferi Mekonnen, this historic institution was built with the vision of leading Ethiopia into modern civilization. Beyond being a pioneer of modern education, it served as the cradle of Ethiopian literature. Literary giants like Hadis Alemayehu (author of Fikir Eske Mekabir) and Afewerk Gebre-Yesus laid their foundations in language and composition within these walls. Today, the school continues to honor its heritage by encouraging students to express their ideas through the art of writing, remaining a vital source of knowledge for the nation.
በ፲፱፻፶ (1958) ዓ.ም. በሰዓሊ አለፈለገ ሰላም ጥረት የተመሠረተው ይህ ተቋም፣ በምስል ጥበብ ብቻ ሳይሆን በድርሰትና በሥነ-ጽሑፍ ፍልስፍናም የታወቀ ነው። ትምህርት ቤቱ እንደ ገብረክርስቶስ ደስታ ያሉ ታላላቅ ሰዓሊያንና ባለቅኔዎችን ያፈራ ማዕከል ነው። እዚህ ግቢ ውስጥ ስዕልና ድርሰት ተነጣጥለው አይታዩም፤ ተማሪዎቹ የሚስሏቸውን ስዕሎች በጽሑፍና በጥልቅ ድርሰት የታጀበ ትርጉም እንዲሰጧቸው ይበረታታሉ። በአሁኑ ወቅት በአዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ሥር የሚገኘው ይህ ተቋም፣ ዛሬም ድረስ በፈጠራ ድርሰት ላይ ያተኮሩ ጥናቶችን በማበረታታት የጽሑፍ ጥበብን ከምስል ጥበብ ጋር አዋህዶ እያሳደገ ይገኛል።

አቢሲኒያ በግል ዘርፍ ከተከፈቱ የጥበብ ማዕከላት መካከል ግንባር ቀደሙ ሲሆን፣ በተለይ በወጣቶች ዘንድ ትልቅ ተቀባይነት ያለው ተቋም ነው። ማዕከሉ በስዕልና በሙዚቃ ቢታወቅም፣ በፈጠራ ድርሰት ዙሪያ የሚሰጣቸው ሥልጠናዎች በርካታ ወጣት ደራሲያን የቃላት ውበትንና የታሪክ አወቃቀርን እንዲያጠኑ ረድቷቸዋል። እንደ አርቲስት ሰላም ተስፋዬ ያሉና ሌሎችም በኪነ-ጥበብ ዘርፍ ስማቸው የገነነ ግለሰቦች የጥበብን መንገድ ለማወቅ በዚህ ተቋም አልፈዋል። ዛሬም በተለያዩ ወርክሾፖች የድርሰት ፍላጎት ያላቸውን ሰልጣኞች በማሳተፍ የሀገራችንን ስነ-ጽሁፍ እያደመቀ ይገኛል።

ቶም የሥነ-ጥበብ ትምህርት ቤት የቴክኖሎጂና የፈጠራ ድርሰት መገናኛ ነው ማለት ይቻላል። በተለይ ለፊልም፣ ለቲያትርና ለሬዲዮ የሚሆኑ የድርሰት ሥራዎች (Script Writing) ላይ ትኩረት በማድረጉ በዘመናዊው የሚዲያ ዓለም ውስጥ ስኬታማ የሆኑ ብዙ ባለሙያዎችን አፍርቷል። በርካታ በግል የሚሰሩ የፊልም ድርሰት አዘጋጆችና የጽሑፍ ባለሙያዎች መሠረታዊ የድርሰት ጥበቡን የቀሰሙት እዚህ ነው። ተቋሙ በአሁኑ ወቅት በካዛንቺስ አካባቢ በሚገኘው ግቢው፣ ድርሰትን ከዲጂታል ጥበብ ጋር በማቀናጀት ለዘመኑ የሚመጥኑ የጥበብ ስራዎች እንዲፈጠሩ እገዛ እያደረገ ይገኛል።
